Therapy FAQs

How can meditation help me as part of my therapy?
The skills of meditation will sometimes be taught in sessions. While the science of meditation is continually being researched, it has already been shown to offer individuals many benefits: these include better sleeping patterns, reduction in anxiety and depression, improved mental acuity, elevated mood and a feeling of well being. There is also much research to suggest that meditation plays a key role in the healing process of many 'physical' diseases.

Beyond the immediate health benefits to the individual, meditation can play a vital role in developing healthy personal relationships, finding one's life purpose and overcoming difficult life experiences. These are all key areas that can be explored in sessions.

What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis in therapy. Hypnosis can best be defined as a state of calm in which the conscious mind is relaxed, so allowing communication with the unconscious mind. Communication with the unconscious mind is two way: it provides information, but also receives positive and beneficial suggestions, which are in the interest of the patient. Part of the skill of a good hypnotherapist is to work with the patient's unconscious mind, suggesting desired changes appropriately. When the conscious and unconscious mind are brought into harmony and balance, the desired results will occur.

So what does hypnosis feel like?
It is a familiar feeling as all of us have experienced hypnosis many times before; when we have driven to work only to arrive and wonder how we got there! Essentially, hypnosis is akin to being completely engrossed in something, to the exclusion of all distractions... Some describe hypnosis as being halfway being wakefullness and sleep; and it is nearly always a very pleasant experience.

Is hypnotherapy safe?
Yes, hypnotherapy is safe. It is a naturally occurring state - and what's more, its long-lasting and has no negative side-effects.

Do I still need to see a doctor if I am worried about a medical condition?
Yes; It is essential to have a medical examination with regard to any medical condition over which you have concerns. Furthermore, you should remain taking any medication as prescribed by your doctor and only reduce or eliminate such medication in consultation with your doctor.

Is therapy confidential?
Yes. All information between therapist and patient is completely confidential. With informed consent, I will make written notes of the sessions. These are for clinical purposes and are used only to further the therapeutic strategy. Notes are always kept secure and confidential. Professional and legal requirements determine how long notes must be kept. After that they are destroyed. Complete confidentiality is essential to successful therapy.
