Meditation Courses 2009

Our meditation courses have been running for a few years now and have grown steadily over that time. From tiny beginnings, the courses are now very well attended, most students coming via word of mouth. See testimonials.

Each term, a 'course book' is used and this forms the heart of the learning material. To get the most form the course, it is essential that you read the book before the term starts. Additional notes may be given via email at the start of the term, but these are kept to a minimum so that we can explore the art of meditation in practice, rather than theory.

Please note that the courses often book up well in advance of the term start date, with a waiting list thereafter. To join a course, simply email angus@batterseayoga.com . You will then be requested to send payment for the course shortly before it begins.

What happens on these courses?

These courses are for students who wish to discover the benefits of meditation and go deeper into their Yoga practice. We sit on chairs or cushions, and start each week with a short guided meditation; this is followed by a brief talk on a topic from the book. This is then opened up for discussion amongst the group, allowing us to explore and experience ways in which we can bring peace and equanimity into our lives.

What will I learn?

You will learn many techniques for entering meditation; you will deepen your understanding of the purpose of Yoga; and you will discover how to let go of old thinking patterens & habitual stress. The result? More joy and ease in your life. Most importantly the groups are set up to be experiential - so you can experience mindfullness in practice. (Talking about theories is interesting, but rarely leads to lasting change)

Which books are used?

We use many different books and it changes each term. Generally for the beginner's courses, we use Eckhart Tolle's books (The Power of Now and A New Earth.)

For the more experienced group, a new book will be announced some weeks before the start of each term.

It is essential that your course book is read before the start of term.

Group Size? Where do classes take place?

From Sept 09, courses will be run in St Vincent's church hall at 36 Altenburg Gardens, SW11. Class numbers will be limited to around 20 students per session. That way we will maintain the intimacy and energy of the group.

Students report that they find these evenings uplifting, engaging and highly enjoyable (see testimonials page). But if you still unsure, feel free to call on 020 7978 7995 to discuss whether this course is for you.

“We could say that meditation doesn't have a reason or doesn't have a purpose. In this respect it's unlike almost all other things we do except perhaps making music and dancing. When we make music we don't do it in order to reach a certain point, such as the end of the composition. If that were the purpose of music then obviously the fastest players would be the best. Also, when we are dancing we are not aiming to arrive at a particular place on the floor as in a journey. When we dance, the journey itself is the point, as when we play music the playing itself is the point. And exactly the same thing is true in meditation. Meditation is the discovery that the point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment.”

Alan Watts
